Black-market in Ethiopia
Black-market traders do exist in Ethiopia. Unlike previous years when black-market was the most desirable and fair place to exchange all currencies and had fair deals, everything has drastically changed now.
Currently, they are characterized by reduced rates and fake notes.
Avoid the black-market as much as you can since it is considered an illegal business here, and if found, it is quite risky as penalties will be imposed on you accordingly, and you might be punished by law.
Stick to the exchange rates offered by Forex facilities in banks, and you won’t be in trouble. It doesn’t worth the risk!
Always keep the receipt of the currency exchange safely as you might be asked at the airport to show proof and account for the foreign currency if you have more than 3000 US dollars.
Stamping on the passport is always done by banks in Ethiopia to show proof of converting Ethiopian Birr to any foreign currency with the specific amount transacted.
