Privacy Policy

Last updated: 30 September 2026.

EthiopianInfo.com is a free travel guide to Ethiopia written by Dawit Deggu Mohis in Addis Ababa. This page explains what information is collected when you visit the site, who collects it, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, please contact me.

The short version

  • You can read every page without an account and without giving your name or email.
  • The site is paid for by Google advertising. Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads, and in the UK, EU and some other places you are asked for your consent first.
  • If you send a message through the contact form, I receive what you type in it and use it only to reply.
  • I do not sell your personal information.

Advertising

This site shows ads through Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website and to other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners show you ads based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.

You can turn off personalised advertising from Google at any time in Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of personalised ads from many other advertising companies at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu. If you opt out you will still see ads, but they will not be based on your browsing.

Google explains how it uses information from websites like this one on its page How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services, and describes its advertising cookies in its advertising policy.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland see a consent message from Google the first time they visit. Until you agree, advertising and measurement cookies stay switched off and any ads you see are non-personalised. You can change your choice later using the privacy link that Google adds at the bottom of the page, or by clearing this site’s cookies in your browser.

Visitors in US states with privacy laws, such as California, may see an option not to have their information sold or shared for advertising. Where it appears, you can use it at any time.

Cookies used on this site

Apart from the advertising cookies described above, the site uses a small number of cookies to work properly: one remembers your consent choice, one remembers whether you opened or closed an article’s table of contents, and the site’s security firewall (Wordfence) uses cookies to tell real visitors from automated attacks. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the articles will still be readable.

Share buttons and embedded content

Articles have buttons for sharing on Facebook, Pinterest and similar services. These load code from those companies, which may record that you visited the page, especially if you are logged in to them. Author pictures are loaded from Gravatar, a service run by Automattic. Some pages may embed videos or maps from other websites, which behave as if you had visited those websites directly. Each of these companies has its own privacy policy.

Information you send me

When you use the contact form, your name, email address and message are emailed to me so that I can reply. I do not add you to a mailing list and I do not pass your message to anyone else. If you leave a comment on an article, the comment, name, email address and your computer’s IP address are stored to help detect spam, and your email address may be checked against Gravatar to show a profile picture.

Server logs and security

Like almost every website, the site’s host and its security firewall keep technical logs of visits: IP address, browser type, the page requested, the referring page and the time. These logs are used to keep the site running and to block attacks, and are not used to identify individual readers.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information this site holds about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to its use, or to receive a copy of it. In practice the only personal information I hold myself is what you send through the contact form or a comment. To make a request, contact me and I will reply within 30 days. For information held by Google or the other companies named above, please use their own privacy tools.

Children

This site is written for adult travellers and does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent personal information through the site, please get in touch and it will be deleted.

Changes to this policy

If the way the site collects information changes, for example a new advertising partner or an analytics tool, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
