Addis Ababa rewards a day or two of unhurried exploring. Start with one museum, a neighborhood walk or market visit, and time for coffee and a meal. Distances and traffic can make a long checklist unrealistic. The suggestions below are starting points; confirm opening times, entry fees and access directly before setting out.
The National Museum of Ethiopia
The National Museum brings together archaeology, art and Ethiopian history. The hominin exhibits, including the fossil known as Lucy, are a major draw. Check current gallery access and ticket details before visiting; exhibitions and hours can change.
Meskel Square and the Red Terror Martyrs Memorial Museum
Meskel Square is a major gathering place and useful city landmark. Nearby, the Red Terror Martyrs Memorial Museum covers political violence under the Derg. Allow time to read and reflect; the subject is difficult. Do not assume that the museum is always open or free—check locally before travelling there.
Entoto for views and history
The Entoto hills offer views across Addis Ababa. Entoto Maryam Church and its museum are linked to the early history of the capital; Entoto Park offers a different, more recreational visit. The altitude is noticeable, so bring a layer and take the day at a comfortable pace. Check access, tickets and transport separately for each site.
Merkato and Shiro Meda
Merkato is an active trading district rather than a single attraction. Go with a local guide if you want context or help navigating it, and agree on the route and fee in advance. Shiro Meda is a useful stop for textiles and traditional clothing. Ask before photographing people or stalls and keep valuables secure in crowds.
Coffee, food and an easy evening
A coffee ceremony can be a better introduction to the city than rushing between landmarks. Try injera with a mixed platter, or explore regional dishes at a well-reviewed restaurant. - Morning: National Museum or another museum you particularly want to see.
- Lunch: Ethiopian food and coffee at a convenient venue.
- Afternoon: Entoto for views, or a guided market visit if you prefer city life.
- Evening: Keep travel time flexible and arrange your return transport before it gets late.

Traffic can be slow, and travel advice may change. Use a trusted taxi or ride app, or ask your accommodation to arrange a car.
