Wenchi is a deep volcanic crater in the highlands west of Addis Ababa, with a blue-green lake at the bottom, a small island monastery, hot springs and steep green slopes farmed by the villagers who live around the rim. It is one of the most beautiful landscapes within easy reach of the capital, and the walk, ride and boat trip down into the crater make a perfect day out.
Where it is
Wenchi lies about 155 km west of Addis Ababa, between the towns of Ambo and Woliso. The crater rim is at roughly 3,000 metres, high enough to be cool and often misty in the mornings. Many visitors drive there and back in a long day; a night in Woliso or Ambo makes the trip more relaxed.
What to do
- Go down into the crater. From the visitor centre on the rim, a path winds down through fields and forest to the lakeshore. You can walk, or ride one of the local horses with a horse handler, which is the traditional way to make the descent.
- Take a boat across the lake to the island church of Wenchi Cherkos, a small monastery dating back centuries, with a view back up to the crater walls.
- Visit the hot springs on the far side of the lake, where local people come to bathe and collect the water, believed to have healing powers.
- Walk back up through the villages, or ride. Allow four to six hours for the whole round.
Community tourism
Visits are run by a local ecotourism association. Fees go to the community, and guides, horse handlers and boatmen come from the villages around the crater. Pay the official fee at the visitor centre and ask there about the current prices for horses and boats, so that you do not need to negotiate on the path.
When to go
- October to February is the best season: dry, clear and green after the rains.
- June to September brings heavy rain, slippery paths and mist; the scenery is lush, but the descent is harder.
See when to visit and Ethiopian seasons.
What to bring
- Warm layers and a rain jacket: the rim is high and the weather changes quickly.
- Good walking shoes for the steep path.
- Water, snacks and sun protection.
- Small birr notes for guides, horse handlers and tips; see Ethiopian birr notes.
The altitude can make the climb out tiring, especially in your first days in Ethiopia; see health and medical care.
More day trips from Addis Ababa
Wenchi pairs well with other easy escapes from the capital: the crater lakes of Bishoftu, the hot springs of Sodere, and the monastery of Debre Libanos north of the city. For ideas in the capital itself, see things to do in Addis Ababa.
