You do not need an Ethiopian visa to connect at Addis Ababa Bole Airport if you stay in the international transit area and do not pass immigration. The Ethiopian embassy in Washington states this explicitly. Ethiopian Airlines gives the same guidance regardless of layover length.

Leaving the airport to visit the city or stay at an outside hotel requires permission to enter Ethiopia. Depending on your circumstances, that may mean an e-visa, a visa on arrival, an exemption or transit visa assistance through Ethiopian Airlines’ hotel programme.

References to 12-hour, 24-hour or 72-hour limits on travel websites do not give passengers a general right to leave the airport. Entry requirements apply when you cross passport control.

Staying airside or entering Ethiopia

To stay airside, follow the transfer signs, pass through security and wait in Terminal 2’s departure area for your next international flight. You do not go through immigration. The airline will still check the documents required by your final destination, including any visa.

You enter Ethiopia when you:

  • leave for a taxi, tour or walk in the city;
  • stay at a hotel outside the airport, including one provided by the airline;
  • collect bags to check them in again on a separate ticket;
  • connect to a domestic flight, which requires clearing customs in Addis Ababa; or
  • use the bank or SIM counters in the arrivals hall.

Documents that allow you to leave the airport

E-visa

Applying in advance through the official portal, evisa.gov.et, lets you arrange your entry visa before travelling. A visit of only a few hours still requires permission to enter.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your entry date. You also need a recent photo and a colour scan of your passport. Normal processing takes about three days, so apply early. Wait for approval: a payment receipt is not a visa. Keep the approval on your phone and carry a printed copy. See our Ethiopia visa guide for details.

Use the official portal; other websites may look official and charge extra.

Visa on arrival

Some nationalities can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Bole. Check whether your passport qualifies before flying, as the airline may refuse boarding without the documents it requires. If you cannot confirm eligibility for a visa on arrival, apply for an e-visa in advance.

Transit visa assistance with the airline hotel

Ethiopian Airlines offers a free hotel for connections of 8 to 24 hours in Addis Ababa when both flights are on a single ticket and operated by Ethiopian Airlines. The airline says eligible passengers are generally helped with a transit visa, so a separate application is usually unnecessary.

Confirm the arrangements for your booking before travelling:

  • Do you qualify for the hotel?
  • Will you stay at the airside Skylight In-Terminal Hotel or a hotel outside the airport?
  • For an outside hotel, how is entry arranged, and is there a fee?
  • Where should you collect the voucher?

The in-terminal hotel is in Terminal 2’s departure transit area, so you can sleep there without entering Ethiopia. An outside hotel requires entry permission. The voucher alone does not authorise you to leave the secure area.

Do not assume you can obtain a transit visa by approaching immigration independently. We could not find an official procedure or fee for this on the government portal.

Exemptions

The UK government’s travel advice says a valid Ethiopian Origin ID (the “yellow card”), Ethiopian temporary resident permit or Ethiopian diplomatic ID exempts the holder from needing a visa. A US, UK or Schengen visa does not provide an exemption on its own.

The proposed 24-hour to 7-day visa-free stopover

In April 2026, Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers approved a “stopover tourism” policy that would allow Ethiopian Airlines transit passengers to leave the airport without a visa for stays of 24 hours up to 7 days.

Ethiopian Airlines said in August 2026 that the policy still needed parliamentary ratification and was not in force. Although some news sites have reported its introduction, as of 1 November 2026 we could not confirm an official notice that it had started.

Do not base your travel plans on the proposal until its implementation is officially confirmed. Arrange an e-visa if you need one to leave the airport. We will update this page when the policy starts.

Separate tickets and baggage collection

On separate bookings, the first airline may not transfer your bags to the second. If you must collect them in arrivals, you will pass immigration before checking in again. You need an Ethiopian visa or exemption for this, regardless of how long you have between flights.

Airline minimum connection times apply to transfers on one ticket. Do not use them to plan a self-transfer. Ask both airlines how the baggage transfer and check-in will work before buying separate tickets.

What to carry

  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • Your onward booking, including the ticket number, flight times and final destination.
  • Your onward boarding pass and bag tags, if issued at your first airport.
  • Ethiopian e-visa approval or proof of exemption if you plan to leave the airport.
  • Your hotel voucher, if you have one.
  • Any visa or permit required at your final destination.
  • A yellow fever certificate if required for your journey. See health and medical care.
  • Printed copies of your documents and a charged phone.

If advice conflicts

Old travel advice can remain online for years. If information conflicts, ask Ethiopian Airlines about your flights and check with the e-visa portal or the nearest Ethiopian embassy. Keep written replies. The immigration officer at Bole makes the final entry decision. Stay airside if you cannot confirm permission to enter.
