Ethiopia’s weather changes with altitude and region, so a single national forecast can be misleading. Travellers usually hear both the four-season calendar and the local rainfall terms Bega, Belg, and Kiremt. Use the guide below as a planning framework, then check a current forecast for the places on your route.
Quick points
- Bega: the generally dry season, roughly October to January, although temperatures vary widely between lowlands and highlands.
- Belg: a shorter rainy period, roughly February to May in many areas, with important regional differences.
- Kiremt: the main rainy season across much of the northern, central, and western highlands, generally June to September.
- The south and southeast follow different rainfall patterns, so dates that work for Addis Ababa or Lalibela may not work for every region.
- Altitude matters: highland mornings can feel cool while lower areas are hot in the same month.
Bega: the drier months
Bega is often the easiest period for clear highland days and road travel, but nights and early mornings can be cold in Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Gondar, and the Simien area. Pack layers, lip balm, sun protection, and a light warm jacket.
Belg: a shorter rainy period
Belg brings showers to many parts of the country, but the timing and strength vary by region. Expect a mix of sun and rain rather than a washout every day. A light waterproof layer, shoes that can handle wet ground, and flexible plans help.
Kiremt: the main highland rains
Kiremt is the main rainy season for much of the northern and central highlands. Trails and unpaved roads can become muddy, cloud can cover viewpoints, and travel times may increase. The season can still offer bright breaks, especially when plans allow extra time.
What to pack by season
- All year: comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, and a light layer.
- Dry months: a warm layer for highland mornings and dust protection for road journeys.
- Rainy months: a compact waterproof jacket, a dry bag for electronics, and footwear with grip.
- High-altitude trips: warmer layers than the daytime temperature suggests, especially for early starts.
Plan by region, not just by month
Before booking, check the route itself: Addis Ababa, the northern historic circuit, the Rift Valley, the Bale Mountains, and the south can experience different conditions at the same time. Look at current forecasts and road or park updates for each destination.
